1. Drink plenty of water
Did you know that about 64% of your skin is made up water? When you are dehydrated, it shows up first in your skin. Dermatologists recommend the consumption of at least 8 glasses of water per day.
Drinking ample amounts of water daily also decreases acne outbreaks because it regulates oil and sebum production of the skin. When these two are well coordinated your have fewer instances of clogged pores.
2. Avoid prolonged Sun exposure
Keep yourself away from prolonged direct sunlight as much as possible. Although small periods of sunshine exposure is good for your health, longer periods are detrimental to your skin. Issues like wrinkles, aging, sunburn, pigmentation and dry, irritable skin are all caused by over-exposure to sunlight, not to mention the increased risk of skin cancer.
When you need to go out, make sure you expose as little skin as possible by covering up with clothing, wearing wide-brimmed hats and applying a good-quality sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15.
3. Sweat it out - exercise
It may come as a surprise to you that exercise is a key factor to healthy skin. When you exercise, it increases your blood flow which in turn nourishes your cells. Good blood flow further eradicates toxins and waste from your body including free radicals, which are notorious for causing wrinkled and aged skin. Furthermore, exercise reduces stress which is also linked to increased production of cortisol, a hormone that affects aging.
In short, exercise is vital for internal skin nourishment which manifests itself externally in the form of supple and healthy skin.
4. Sleep well
Adults are recommended to sleep for a minimum of 8 hours per day. This is because during sleep you are at total rest and the body takes that opportunity to repair and rejuvenate your skin. Research has also proven that lack of sleep leads to aging and irreversible cell damage. Maximizing sleep also helps to reduce stress which also promotes healthy skin.
5. Eat a healthy diet
There is an adage that says “You are what you eat”. This could not be truer. Having a balanced diet with a balance of the right essential foods will nourish your skin to perfection. Citrus fruits like oranges and lemons provide much-needed Vitamin C for the skin which prevents blemishes and makes the skin look radiant.
Foods rich in beta-carotene like spinach and broccoli and those rich in lutein like sweet potatoes have antioxidants which are necessary for normal skin tone and development.
Lastly, foods rich in Vitamin E like hazelnuts shield the skill from oxidative cell deformation and damage.
